Anna Fischbacher gave the best possible response to being left out of the Austria team for last month's Winter Olympics by taking victory in the women's downhill as racing finally took place in Crans Montana, Switzerland.

Bad weather, including fog, had caused the postponement of Saturday's downhill until the following day with the super combined cancelled as a result of the rescheduling. The start was again delayed as fog continued to persist but with the weather lifting slightly, the skiers finally got a chance to take to the piste. And it was Fischbacher, winner of Super-G Olympic gold four years ago in Vancouver before being omitted for Sochi, who mastered the conditions the best, recording a time of 1:34.00minutes from her run. In doing so, she edged teammate Anna Fenninger, who took Fishbacher's crown in the Super-G in Sochi as well as silver in the giant slalom, into silver by 0.15seconds. Olympic downhill champion Tina Maze completed the podium for Slovenia while overall World Cup leader Maria Hoefl-Riesch finished ninth.
