American alpine skier Travis Ganong dominated a shortened course in Italy to claim his maiden World Cup win on his 70th start in the Santa Caterina downhill.
The 26-year-old had just one podium finish prior to his victory in Santa Caterina, a third in the Kvitfjell downhill back in February, but his star is very much on the rise.
Ganong finished an impressive fifth in the Olympic downhill on debut in Sochi prior to his Kvitfjell efforts and was finally the best in Santa Caterina as the weather intervened.
High winds on the upper part of the course forced the start gate to be lowered, the run shortened by 590 metres, and it was Ganong who mastered it best for victory.
He clocked a winning time of 1:32.42 minutes with Olympic downhill champion Matthias Mayer just 0.09 seconds behind in second and home skier Dominik Paris third a further 0.12 in total.
Ganong's win keeps the American run going in the World Cup downhill this season after Steven Nyman's success in Val Gardena, current leader Kjetil Jansrud having won the first two.
Jansrud was outside the top ten in Santa Caterina however in 14th with 1:33.77, that following his second place in the previous downhill in Val Gardena.
