American Vonn was searching for a fourth consecutive podium finish after winning Saturday's downhill event and she was .01 seconds ahead of Goergl's time on the first split.
However, the 30-year-old slid off the Oreiller-Killy course after going too tightly into a turn to see her hopes of another victory wiped out.
That left 2011 Super G world champion Goergl top of the pile in France, in a time of 1.25:42, with compatriot Anna Fenninger just 0.05 seconds back in second.
Slovenian Tina Maze completed the podium with a time of 1.25:55 and she stays on top of the overall World Cup leaderboard.
