Marco Sullivan of the United States and Canadian Louis-Pierre Helie were injured in separate incidents and had to be airlifted to hospital.
Sullivan skied down to the bottom after crashing on a jump but was taken to hospital as a precaution, while Helie suffered a head injury, briefly losing consciousness though reportedly coming back around on the way to hospital.
The Stelvio course is particularly icy at the moment, and Kroell's bright performance today, coupled with his run yesterday, when he was third-quickest, puts him high amongst the favourites for tomorrow's race.
Kroell's time of 2 minutes, 1.56 seconds, was 0.58 seconds better than that of his nearest challenger, compatriot Mario Scheiber.
Swiss star Didier Cuche was third, with the improving Bode Miller fourth, and Michael Walchhofer sixth.
