Lara Gut victorious in opening giant slalom of the season

Switzerland's Lara Gut laid down an early marker of intent for the campaign ahead after dominating the season-opening ladies giant slalom race in Soelden.

Last season's overall Crystal Globe winner Gut was in impressive form on the Austrian slopes, setting up her win with a blistering first run time of 1:10.11 minutes.
The 25-year-old was over a second and a half quicker than her rivals and, after backing that up with 1:12.91 on her second run, finished 1.44 seconds clear of the field with a combined winning time of 2:23.02.

It was the overall World Cup champion's 19th career victory with America's Mikaela Shiffrin repeating the second-place she managed in last year's race.
Marta Bassino of Italy was the only other skier to finish within two seconds of Gut to earn her maiden top-three result.
Sunday sees the men's giant slalom race take place in Soelden.
