After winning Friday's giant slalom, Maze was eyeing up a 27th World Cup win and put the pressure on in Sweden in freezing conditions with a strong second run on the icy Olympia course.
Pietilae-Holmner held her nerve to clinch the win, and third of her career, winning in a combined time of 1:43.65 minutes, just 0.06 seconds ahead of Maze.
And the home fans in northern Sweden had even more reason to cheer as Frida Hansdotter finished 0.32 behind in third for her 13th career podium.
Olympic slalom champion Mikaela Shiffrin of the United States just missed out on another podium, finishing fourth after a brilliant second run that was full of her trademark aggression.
Despite finishing third in Are it is Hansdotter who leads the way in the World Cup slalom standings on 220 points, Slovenian Maze 11 further back in second while Pietilae-Holmner is third on 200.
However Maze is still leading the way in the overall World Cup standings, sitting pretty at the top on 560 points with her nearest challenger Anna Fenninger of Austria second on 303.
