Mikaela Shiffrin recorded the biggest winning margin in women’s slalom World Cup history as she dominated both runs in the first race of the season.
Shiffrin bounced back from sliding out of Friday’s Grand Slalom to win the World Cup event in Aspen by 3.07 seconds, surpassing the previous record set in 1968 by France’s Florence Steurer.
The American held a lead of 1.38 seconds after the first run and then increased the advantage even further to claim the 15th World Cup victory of her career.
Slovakia's Veronika Velez-Zuzulova remained second, having occupied the slot after the first round, and Sweden's Frida Hansdotter took bronze.
“It (the record) is probably one of those things that won't happen again, but I am glad it happened,” Shiffrin said.
“I really charged and I fought hard in the second run. It was a big disappointment (on Friday) so I had some anger and I kind of took that into today I think. The second run today was a little dark with some rough spots and couple of holes here and there.
“I just put my skis down the hill and stressed I was going in the right direction. I kind of just closed my eyes and went down the mountain and it ended up OK.”
