Teenage alpine skier Burkhart dies in crash

German skier Max Burkhart has died following a crash on a training run in Lake Louise, Canada.

Burkhart, 17, was preparing for the Nor-Am Cup at the ski resort but suffered a horrendous incident on December 5 when he crashed into safety netting.

But Burkhart died on December 6, with his the news being confirmed the following day.

A statement from Alpine Canada said:

" Alpine Canada and Alberta Alpine are devastated about this tragic loss of life and sends its deepest condolences to his family and team-mates. Alpine Canada and Alberta Alpine encourage the ski family around the world to support the athletes’ family and team-mate through this difficult time."

FIS, the international ski federation, said in a statement:

" The FIS alpine family is once again affected by a tragic loss. Max Burkhart passed away yesterday in Canada, after a crash in the Nor-Am Cup race at Lake Louise. The 17-year-old was a member of Ski Club Partenkirchen in Germany and attended Sugar Bowl Academy in California. FIS expresses its sincere condolences to his family, his team-mates and his loved ones."
