Ellington: I'm lucky to be alive after horror crash

The athlete was involved with the incident alongside teammate Nigel Levine in Tenerife, suffering career and life-threatening injuries from which he is still recovering in a British hospital.

It caused Ellington two broken legs and a broken pelvis, as well as fractures of the eye socket, with the 31-year-old feeling fortunate just to be able to tell the tale of the incident.

But despite the serious nature of his injuries, the sprinter is confident he can return to competitive action as early as 2018, looking to follow up a 2016 season that saw him hit personal bests over 100m and 200m on the track.

"I was on the floor thinking to myself 'what the hell is going on'? It was a nightmare," he told the BBC.

"There was blood everywhere and I looked at my leg and my leg was in pieces, my head was split open.

"The crash was so horrific, I don't think most people would have survived it to be honest. When I was laying on a hospital bed in Tenerife, my team-mates came to visit me.

"They were getting pretty emotional, but I was saying 'it's cool' because I knew that I was lucky to be alive."
