Gemili crossed the line in a time of 20.35secs, behind American Noah Lyles, who won with a time of 19.90, with his countryman LaShawn Merritt second in 20.27.
19-year-old Lyles, who turns 20 in July, was strong off the bend and powered away from the rest of the field to become only the fourth man to run sub-20 seconds before turning 20.
As for Gemili he was pleased with his performance in what was his first 200m event of the campaign.
He said on Twitter: "First 200m this season with my fastest opener of 20.35. Will look to get sharper and faster as I race more. Thanks to all for the support."
Gemili is building up to the World Championship in London later this summer and hopes to claim a medal.
The 23-year-old finished fourth in the 200m at Rio 2016, just three thousandths of a second away from a bronze medal.
But there was disappointment for another pair of Brits, as high jumper Robbie Grabarz cleared his first attempt at a height of 2.20m but exited after three failures at 2:24m, while Anyika Onuora came last in the women’s 400m in a time of 53.98secs.
