Farah is normally associated with long distance running having won gold in the 5,000m and 10,000m at London 2012 before repeating the trick at the 2013 World and 2014 European Championships.
He has not run the shorter 1500m distance since the Monaco Diamond League in July 2013, although his time of 3:28.81 still remains a British record.
And the 32-year-old admits he will be looking to work on his speed work when he takes to the start line on June 7.
"The World Championships in Beijing is the main aim for this year. Birmingham will be good to work on my speed in a shorter early season race," said Farah.
"It will be good to step down and test myself at a shorter distance.
"Some of the best middle distance runners in the world will be in the field so I will have to be at my best to compete with them."
