Mo Farah wins on British track farewell

Barely a week had passed since his script-spoiling defeat at the IAAF World Championships in London, but there was no hangover as he cruised to victory in 7:38.64 ahead of Spain’s Adel Mechaal.

Farah will turn his attention to the road after his track swansong in Zurich next Thursday.

"The emotion was high and I had a lot of support from the home crowd," Farah said.

"This is what we dream of - having a home crowd cheer you on - and I want to thank everyone who has supported me and followed my journey.

"I never dreamed of becoming four times Olympic champion and a multi world champion. All I ever dreamed of was competing for Britain.

"Now I just want to continue to see what I can do on the road, without having a target on my back, and just try to enjoy it without so much pressure. "I'm going to a completely new game on the roads with a new mind and I'm excited."

The 34-year-old’s six-year unbeaten run at major championships was ended last weekend in London when Ethopia’s Muktar Edris pipped him in the 5000m, leaving Farah with the silver medal, although he had already secured gold in the 10,000m on the opening day.

Farah secured GB’s only individual medals, with four relay podiums – including the stunning gold from the men’s 4x100m quartet – masking a difficult home championships.
