Muir finished seventh in the Olympic final in Rio but bossed the race at the Stade de France to finish ahead of Kenyan Olympic champion Faith Kipyegon.
IAAF president Seb Coe was among the first to congratulate the 23-year old, who crossed the line in three minutes 55.22 seconds, breaking the national record for the second time in five weeks.
"The race was amazing,” said Muir. "I couldn't believe the time, especially since I had not done one track session since Rio.
“I just went with the pacemaker and I knew I had to dig in and hold on during the third lap."
Elsewhere, Great Britain’s Lorraine Ugen was second in the long jump with a best effort of 6.80m, Desiree Henry ran 22.46 seconds to finish second behind Dutch favourite Dafne Schippers in the 200m, and Cindy Ofili came third in the 100m hurdles.
And in-form Joel Fearon and Chijindu Ujah finished fourth and eighth respectively in the men's 100m, with times of 10.05 seconds and 10.15 seconds.
