Muir to bid for double glory as British squad named for European Indoor Championships

Muir was today named among the 32-strong British Athletics squad for the 2017 European Athletics Indoor Championships in Belgrade, which take place from March 3-5.

The 23-year-old, who made her Olympic Games debut in Rio last summer, has already broken the European 3000m indoor record and British 5000m and 1000m indoor records this year.

She is joined in the squad by a number of fellow Olympians including London 2012 bronze medallist Robbie Grabarz and Rio bronze medallists Asha Philip and Eilidh Doyle, while Richard Kilty will be looking to defend his European title from two years ago.

Also included is heptathlete Katarina Johnson-Thompson, although she will compete in the long jump alongside British champion and world indoor bronze medallist Lorraine Ugen and European silver medallist Jazmin Sawyers.

Andrew Pozzi, the fastest man in the world this year over 60m hurdles, will also aim for a successful showing. British Athletics performance director Neil Black said: "I'm pleased with the blend of this team. We've got Olympic medallists in Robbie Grabarz, Eilidh Doyle and Asha Philip; World Indoor medallists in Lorraine Ugen and Richard Kilty; as well as exceptionally talented athletes like Katarina Johnson-Thompson, Laura Muir and Andrew Pozzi, all of whom I expect to make the step up this year and start winning global medals.

"Then we have Jazmin Sawyers, Steph Twell and Lee Emanuel, all European medallists who should be looking to make a statement of intent for 2017 by repeating those performances and finishing on the podium in Belgrade. Plus, there is a good depth of emerging talent with the likes of Shelayna Oskan-Clarke, Morgan Lake and David Omoregie, who all have potential to claim medals.

"With a home World Championships in London, 2017 is an even bigger year for us than 2016, so starting it off in a positive manner is essential and I am expecting to see a number of medal winning performances in Belgrade."
