Nimmo eyes Euros

The 21-year-old is currently based in America at Western Kentucky University and, while she may be gone, she's ensuring she's not forgotten after writing her name into the record books.

Nimmo jumped 6.47 metres in winning the Hilltopper Relays last month, beating the previous record of 6.43m set by Myra Nimmo (no relation) that had stood for 39 years.

And now that she has that mark under her belt, former Falkirk Victoria Harriers long-jumper Nimmo is adamant she can make it to Finland for July's European Championships.

"I am still aiming to meet the target to qualify for the European Championships in July, which has a standard set at 6.55m," said Nimmo.

"It is definitely a realistic possibility now after the record jump, because I'm not far away. It's certainly more realistic than the Olympics.

"I want to better the record now, but I need to make sure I'm jumping at least 6.20m to 6.30m consistently this year, so I can then progress further next year.

"I won't be able to qualify for the London Olympics, but I am targeting 2016 Rio. Hopefully by then I will be at the standard needed to compete."

And, while Nimmo is seemingly ruling herself out of competing at this summer's Olympics, she will still take part in the Games having been chosen to carry the London 2012 Torch.

And Nimmo, who will run with the Flame through Falkirk on June 13, admits she can't wait to get under the spotlight of the Olympics.

"I wasn't sure whether I would be able to be a Torchbearer at first, I was just hoping they would choose a date when I would be back in Scotland," she added.

"But luckily I get to carry it the day after I get home to Scotland in my hometown of Falkirk. Everyone's going to be there so it's going to be a great occasion.

"I was thinking that not many people can say they have carried the Torch, so to be one of the people that can say they have is great.

"I'm not sure how I'll feel when I'm holding the Torch until the time, but I'm very excited about it."
