The 24-year-old Belgrave Harrier Benjamin has endured a torrid season through injury and also split with coach Colin Jackson last month, but overcame a bad lane draw at the Nagai Stadium to secure a place in Wednesday's semi-final after finishing third in his heat in 45.44 seconds.
Croydon Harrier Martyn Rooney posted a season best 45.47secs to narrowly miss out on a place as a fastest loser by 0.3 of a second, while UK champion Andrew Steele also fell short in 45.54secs.
"It was a tough heat and I am pleased to have done that from lane one, the previous Commonwealth Champion Michael Blackwood just got knocked out in lane one so I am pleased to have raised my game here with a difficult lane and a poor preparation. I am really pleased with my mental toughness," said Benjamin.
Meanwhile fellow Brit Danvers-Smith was second to Jana Rawlinson of Australia in her hurdles semi final.
The Commonwealth Games silver medallist set a time of 54.08 seconds, the sixth fastest time of the eight finalists.
