"It's a little bit of a stretch right now," manager Brad Ausmus said of Verlander's chances to pitch next Wednesday's regular season game in Detroit, "but I wouldn't wave it off."
Ausmus said Verlander threw from 60 feet at about 60 percent strength Wednesday morning. There was still some lingering soreness for Verlander, who left Friday's spring game in the third inning after covering first base on a ground ball.

The Boston Red Sox announced that catcher Christian Vazquez will undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery on Thursday.
Vazquez felt discomfort in his right elbow after a March 13 game.
The recovery time for non-pitchers from elbow ligament replacement surgery is usually nine months, which would allow Vazquez to return for the 2016 season. Veteran Ryan Hanigan will move into the starting role behind the plate.
---
Washington Nationals third baseman Anthony Rendon will start the season on the disabled list with a sprained MCL.
Rendon was injured in a March 9 game against the Atlanta Braves while making a diving stop.

The New York Mets reportedly picked right-hander Dillon Gee over prospect Rafael Montero for the fifth spot in the rotation.
According to ESPN.com, the Mets went with Gee as the team sought a replacement for the injured Zack Wheeler, who is out for the season due to Tommy John surgery.
Gee, who is 40-34 with a 3.91 ERA in 105 career appearances for the Mets, likely will make his first start of the season on the road against the Atlanta Braves on April 10 or 11.

Houston Astros right-handed pitching prospect Kyle Smith underwent Tommy John surgery, according to the Houston Chronicle.
Smith was a Texas League All-Star in 2014, posting a 9-5 record with a 3.95 ERA and 127 strikeouts.))
