CSKA Moscow upset Maccabi Tel-Aviv 73-69 to win the European basketball league final on Sunday and end the Israeli team's bid for a third consecutive title.
David Vanterpool and Theo Papaloukas led CSKA Moscow to a 73-69 upset win over Maccabi Tel-Aviv to win the European basketball league final on Sunday and spoil the Israeli team's bid for a third consecutive title.
With the score tied at 25, CSKA, looking for a first title since 1971, turned their defense up a notch and went on a 13-0 run to take a five point lead to the locker room at the half.
American forward Vanterpool then caught fire, scoring CSKA's first nine points of the second half as the Russians stretched their lead to 11 points.
But Maccabi, led by the Euroleague's most valuable player Anthony Parker, battled back to tie the score at 46-46 as the third quarter neared an end.
The teams then traded the lead several times until Papaloukas took over down the stretch with eight points in the final quarter to finish on 18 points and seven assists.
Willie Solomon almost brought Maccabi level with 12 points in the second half but several turnovers helped stop his team from winning their fourth title since 2001.
Earlier on Sunday, Tau Ceramica toppled Barcelona 87-82 to take third place.
