Koukalova roars to home Biathlon success in Nove Mesto

Reigning overall cross country champion Gabriela Koukalova won on home snow on Sunday, claiming the 14th World Cup victory of her career in Nove Mesto.

The Czech 27-year-old was not at her best on the two days previously, finishing 13th and eighth in the sprint and pursuit events respectively.

But Koukalova beat Laura Dahlmeier by 3.1 seconds with Dorothea Wierer a further 6.6 seconds back in a tight finish to the race.

With a 5/5 in the first shooting, Koukalova took control of the race, and from there only missed one target on her second visit, while Dahlmeier was always playing catch-up after two initial misses.

It was a second victory of the season for Koukalova, after she also won the pursuit in Ostersund on 4 December, but Dahlmeier extended her lead over Finland’s Kaisa Makarainen with the podium.
