Groves vacating EBU title?
Submitted by BoxRec News on Mon, 03/11/2014 - 15:00.
George Groves, who fights on the big Liverpool PPV show this month against US middleweight Denis Douglin, has apparently vacated his EBU 12 stone belt, mere weeks after claiming it against Christopher Rebrasse.
Though he only collected the title in September, it appears from reports coming in from Spain that Mariano Hilario, the Dominican Republic-born Spanish-domiciled fighter who holds the lesser EBU-EU title, will contest the full strap by 20th December versus France's Hadillah Mohoumadi. This is despite the Spaniard having a bout scheduled for the same date versus aged former WBC belt-holder Cristian Sanavia for the lesser version of the belt.
Whatever the upshot of this particular tangle, it appears that Groves harbours loftier short-term ambitions than the European scene.
Mohoumadi, 34, is known over here mostly for losing a twelve-rounder to James DeGale for the EBU strap in 2012. His record is 18-3 (13), whilst Hilario, 27, is 11-2 (4).
