Latin test for Haskins
Submitted by BoxRec News on Tue, 04/11/2014 - 16:03.
British bantamweight boss Lee Haskins is to return in his home city of Bristol next month, in a ten-rounder against Mexican Willy Velazquez.
The bout—only the second start the 30 year old Haskins has made this year—will be held at the City Academy Sports Centre on the 5th of December, site of Haskins' last three bouts since losing by stoppage in Liege to Belgian Stephan Jamoye in a war at the end of 2012. With that loss, Haskins surrendered his European bantamweight title.
Mexico City native Velazquez, 25, has a record of 17-3-1 (11 by KO). He has lost only one of his last dozen starts, going back to 2010.
Haskins rebuilt following the Jamoye defeat by claiming the British 8st 6lbs title in a bout with Jason Booth, and followed that by stopping Martin Ward in defence of the belt (Ward subsequently challenged for the IBF title held at that time by Stuart Hall). The Bristol fighter's record stands at 29-3 (13 early).
On the undercard is the British super-bantamweight title eliminator between Newport's Robbie Turley and Devon's Jamie Speight, which serves as chief support.
