Londoner Ahmet ‘Punch Picker’ Patterson (13-0) enjoyed a successful away day in Sheffield, picking up the vacant English welterweight title against Rotherham’s Chad Gaynor (15-2), who was withdrawn in the fifth round following a second doctor’s inspection. Both fighters had plenty of notice for the highly anticipated trade clash which should see the winner in prime position to challenge for the Lonsdale strap, currently held by Frankie Gavin, who has sparred both and had picked local man Gaynor to win in style. But it was Patterson’s style that proved too much for Gaynor to cope with. A decent jab got him off to a solid start in the first round as Gaynor (10st 7lbs) assumed the front foot role, looking to push Patterson (10st 6lbs 12oz) back and impose his strength. Gaynor had some success to the body, which drew big cheers from the Sheffield crowd, but he was finding Patterson a slippery target both at distance and on the inside. Accurate left hooks continued to catch Gaynor unawares, and in the fourth, Patterson could see Gaynor’s right eye closing up badly and blood streaming from his nose. Patterson then cranked it up a notch, but was perhaps a touch too wild with some of his attacking shots, one of which threw him off balance and almost put him out of the ring, but he continued to pepper Gaynor’s face, who was by now all four rounds down on BoxRec News’ card. Early in the fifth, referee Richie Davies called the doctor over to inspect Gaynor’s right eye, which was closing fast. He was too easy for Patterson to hit and when Mr Davies tactfully ushered Gaynor over to the doctor for another inspection, the fight was waved off at 2.35. A confident Patterson said afterwards: “It’s just like sparring for me, but I’ve been saying in the gym, if they ain’t wearing no bar head guards, their face is gonna get mangled.” Patterson will now enjoy some ‘Tootsie Time’ with his wife Mrs Jackson before contemplating his next move, which should be an approach for the British title. The headline fight was delayed by some 45 minutes as Jerome Wilson (8-3) was taken to hospital after being knocked out in the sixth by Sheffield based Cameroonian Serge Ambomo (4-0). In the rematch of a small hall classic back in May, Wilson was good for the first round but was sent to the canvas in the second with a big swinging hook. Ambomo walked through Wilson’s shots in the third and continued to launch swinging hooks, most of which were avoided, but he kept ploughing towards Wilson, who resisted bravely. Encouraged by the crowd, Wilson nicked the fourth, but although Ambomo was tiring, his shots were still ferocious, if poorly timed. A right hand put Wilson down heavily in the sixth, and the referee Alvin Finch tried to stop Ambomo going down with him. Wilson was out. With Ambomo almost on top of him, he appeared to kiss Wilson. Of course, this was extremely distasteful, and Ambomo will no doubt be highly embarrassed by his actions. Ambomo’s trainer, Glyn Rhodes MBE, was first to notice Wilson's condition, and quickly, the paramedics were in the ring to attend to Sheffield fighter, who left the Arena unconscious on a stretcher. MC Mike Goodhall announced that Wilson was responsive as he was taken into hospital, which was welcome news. Hopefully, he will make a full and speedy recovery. At Sky televised events, there is usually a precautionary second ambulance waiting outside, so the card can quickly continue if a fighter is taken to hospital. Tonight, this wasn’t the case, and so the main event was delayed until the ambulance had returned from taking Wilson to hospital, as per the British Boxing Board of Control rules. Rossington’s Maxi Hughes (13-1) had a couple of disappointing drop outs. Originally, he was to face Manchester’s Joe Murray, but promotional orders prevented Murray from boxing. It was then announced that Hughes would box former world title challenger, Joseph Laryea, only for the Ghanaian to pull out a couple of days beforehand. And so Hughes ended up in against Georgian Kakhaber Avetisian (35-24-1), who throughout the fight was insistent on touching gloves after almost every exchange. A thoroughly uninteresting ten rounds unfolded, with Avetisian touching down in the sixth, and Hughes unable to force the issue. Referee Howard John Foster tallied 100-89 for Hughes. A cracking scrap between Belper’s Ryan Fields (6-2) and Ramon Levy-Vassie (1-1) from Maidenhead ended in a deserved points win for Fields, which could have been a stoppage. A stylish start from Ramon Levy-Vassie saw Fields in trouble late on in the first, but rather than cover up, he kept throwing back, which allowed Levy Vassie to pick him off and look the part in the process. But halfway through the third, Fields had success with his left hand and it was Levy-Vassie that looked in trouble. Fields dominated the closing round. Repeated success with left hooks stunned Levy-Vassie, who threw little back. Fields had him in serious trouble on the ropes when Howard Foster stepped in and appeared to wave it off, just as the bell sounded. Foster tallied 39-37 for Levy-Vassie. BoxRec News gave Levy-Vassie the first two rounds, but thought a draw would have been harsh on Fields, so gave him the last one 10-8, as it’s difficult to tell whether Foster was stepping in wave it off, or separating them at the bell. A persistent, dogged performance from Fields against an unknown quantity. Steel City southpaw Dave ‘Feel The Fever’ Fidler (7-1) was coming off the back of a disappointing loss to Lee Noble, and returned from injury to stick in on Omagh's Damian Taggart (5-4) towards the end of the first. Taggart did come in a short notice, but wasn’t in any kind of shape to survive the sustained attack from Fidler in the second, causing Alvin Finch to step in at 1.42. There’s talk of Fidler calling it a day, but he said afterwards that if there’s one fight he could have, it would be a return with Noble. Kicking off the bill, Mark Weston (1-0) had a successful debut against Bheki Moyo (0-68-2), and made the South African touch down in the first, before cruising to a points win 40-35 points win. Moyo’s gumshield came out twice in the closer, and perhaps Howard Foster did him a favour by not waving it off. Foster scored 40-35 for Weston. At light heavy, Welshman Nathan King (14-24) should consider himself unlucky not to get something against Doncaster’s Jamie Hughes (6-0), who stayed unbeaten with a 37-39 points win, but was behind on BoxRec News’ card, and talked of retirement afterwards. After Nottinghamshire light welter Fergus Taylor (6-0) secured a 39-37 points win over against Abedare’s Lance Sheehan (5-4), newly crowned Commonwealth bantamweight champion Ross ‘The Boss’ Burkinshaw put in an appearance, with his face healing up nicely after last weekend’s epic battle with Jason Cunningham. Burkinshaw paraded the Commonwealth belt intends to defend the belt in Sheffield. At lightweight, Rotherham’s Lee Appleyard (2-0) was the aggressor against a late stand in, Stockport’s Jamie Quinn (1-2) , but Appleyard got caught plenty of times coming forward. A competitive four rounder in which Quinn had his moments. Referee Alvin Finch scored 39-38 for Appleyard. Aside from a few minor technical issues with sound, the first live card to be streamed Matchroom’s first ‘Fight Pass’ subscription service worked well. For this viewer, there were very few hitches in the transmission of live action, which can often be the problem with internet streaming, as there are many factors which can affect the viewers internet connection. Eddie Hearn and Curtis Woodhouse always have plenty to say, and did a good job filling in during the wait for the Ambulance to return from taking Jerome Wilson to hospital. Our thoughts are with Wilson and his family this weekend,. Hopefully, there will be some good news to report on his condition soon. NewsFight ReportsUK
