Professional boxing returned to Aberdeen on the 1st of November with Darren Traynor (9st) topping the bill in his home city against Poland’s Krzysztof Rogowski (8st 13lbs). Traynor was originally scheduled to face David Savage for the Scottish Area title, however a cut that re-opened in sparring meant a late change in opponent with Rogowski stepping in.
The Pole looked determined and in good shape. The referee throughout the evening was Kenny Pringle and he was kept busy in the main event: both boxers were looking to take the fight to their opponent and this meant that there was quite a lot of holding and clinches in this one as both grappled. Traynor made a breakthrough in round two when a lovely backhand had Rogowski down to give the home boxer a 10-8 round.
Traynor was starting to land some good shots and the Polish fighter had a cut over his right eye in round three. A big left hook stunned Rogowski in round four as the home boxer started to unload. Traynor, cheered on by a noisy crowd throughout, was starting to dominate and a right hand to the body had Rogowski down in the fifth. Referee Pringle looked like he had stopped the contest with the Pole on the ropes however the bell went and Rogowski staggered towards his corner. The end wasn’t long in coming though as Rogowski failed to come out to start round six. Traynor picked up the improves his record to 9(4)-0.
The chief support came from Ronnie “The Shark” Clark (9st 6lbs) who brought a boisterous support up with him from Dundee. In the opposite corner was Latvian Janis Puksins (9st 6lbs). Clark returned to the ring for the first time following a close loss to Troy James in a British Title eliminator and this was a perfect warm up for him as he is due to take on undefeated Craig Evans later in the month in London. Clark looked sharp against his fellow southpaw and he was the aggressor from the start, taking the opening two rounds. A left hand to the body had the man from Riga down in the third. A second left hand to the body had Puksins down again and although he was up and on his feet the referee correctly waived it off. Puksins was still wincing in pain twenty seconds after the fight was stopped with the official time of the stoppage coming 2 minutes and 11 seconds into round three.
Opening the show was Aberdeen’s Marek Laskowski (10st 5lbs) who took on Dan Carr (10st 5lbs) over four-threes. This one started with Laskowski boxing on the front foot mixing his shots well to the head and body. Laskowski had a cut above his right eye by the second in what was a closer more competitive round. Carr was blowing hard by then and looked tired. Laskowski did better when he boxed at range rather than up close and he finished the third round strongly to take a good lead going into the final round. Carr tried to come forward more in the last round and the referee was kept busy having to call break on numerous occasions. The home boxer ran out a comfortable winner with Kenny Pringle scoring it in Laskowski’s favour 40-36.
Rhys Pagan (11st 2lbs) made the long trip north from Sanquhar, Ayrshire to get some rounds against old foe William Warburton (11st 2lbs). Pagan boxed well over the four-threes and dug in some powerful looking body punches against the man from Atherton, Lancashire. Warburton is a tough competitor and he tried to get some punches off although the tight guard of Pagan was hard to break through. Pagan was the busier and got some welcome rounds before he challenges unbeaten Lewis Scott in Gateshead at the end of the month. Pagan was made to work as he boxed well to a 40-36 points victory.
