'We're all racing for second!' - James Ellison reacts to Shakey Byrne's record lap at Brands Hatch
Updated 22/07/2017 at 12:35 GMT
James Ellison says all British Superbikes riders are racing for second at Brands Hatch this weekend after Shane ‘Shakey’ Byrne set the fastest ever lap of the circuit in the final practice session.
The five-time champion, who is just seven points off Kawasaki’s Luke Mossey at the top of the standings, set a time of 1min 24.614, leaving Ellison, who was 0.736secs further back, frustrated.
After seeing Josh Brookes' 2011 record of 1:25.426 smashed, the McAMS Yamaha rider told Eurosport’s Matt Roberts: “You feel like you are on the absolute limit and you see +0.7 [seconds behind the leader] on your board and it’s a little bit demoralising. But then you realise that you are +0.7 off Shakey and 0.2 off second.
“So yeah, we’ve got a little bit of time to find, but not a massive amount.”
To be fair, looking at the way Shakey is going, it’s a bit of a race for second at the minute. I don’t like to admit defeat but. We are all racing for second at the minute. He’s on point.
“But we’re in a position now where we just need podiums. We’ve been on the podium every single weekend and leading races every single weekend.”
Round 6 of the BSB weekend continues with qualifying later on Saturday and two races on Sunday.
