MAN OF THE DAY: Steven Finn. The Middlesex paceman has seen some dark days since his last Test two years ago, but after a promising first-innings display he took centre stage with five wickets, including Michael Clarke and Adam Voges in successive balls.
KEY MOMENT: Nobody wants to put a downer on what is surely set to be an impressive home win, but the moment James Anderson walked off mid-over clutching his side could yet prove crucial to the destination of the urn.
SHOT OF THE DAY: A blast from the past from Stuart Broad, whose batting has fallen off a cliff in the past year. He moved to 31 with a supreme square drive that raced for four only to get out to the very next ball.
BALL OF THE DAY: There are few more arresting sights in cricket than a genuinely fast bowler making batsmen fear more for their safety than their stumps. Mitchell Johnson did the job brilliantly to see off Jonny Bairstow with his third delivery of the day.
STAT OF THE DAY: Chris Rogers now has the longest Test career containing no ducks, having moved to 45 innings without being dismissed for nought.
TWEET OF THE DAY: "For totally selfish reasons I hope the Aussies hold out today! I'm at Edgbaston tomorrow and would like to see at least a couple of hours!" - 2005 Ashes winner Ashley Giles gets his wish to see some live cricket on day three.
DRS USE: Chris Rogers attempted to review his lbw against Broad only to be told by the umpires he was out of time. Jos Buttler also failed to use the system to his advantage, declining to send his dismissal upstairs when he would have been reprieved.
WEATHER FORECAST: After a chilly start there will be some decent sunny periods. Cloud will thicken at times. Maximum Temperature 20°C. (Met Office).
