Just hours after England ditched Alastair Cook on the eve of the tournament, the West Indies Cricket Board made a dramatic change of their own - though the motivation is likely to be rather different.
Unlike Cook, there is little doubt that Bravo is in the Windies' best 50-over side, but as skipper he played a key role in the controversial aborted tour of India and has been criticised by a specially-appointed task force for his role.
Holder, who has 21 caps, has been named to lead a 15-man squad for five ODIs in South Africa next month, with a replacement for seamer Kemar Roach yet to be named.
The same group is expected to travel to Australia and New Zealand for the World Cup in February.
Darren Sammy and Kieron Pollard have also been axed from the one-day panel, but the pair join Bravo in being selected for three Twenty20s against the Proteas.
Sammy has been retained as skipper in the shortest format.
Jonathan Carter and Narsingh Deonarine have been called up to the ODI squad, while Ashley Nurse is back after a three-year hiatus in the T20s.
Announcing Holder's succession, chairman of selectors Clive Lloyd said: "The selectors decided that now is the time to make the transition and Jason will have people around him to help and guide him. Some might say it's close to the time of next year's ICC Cricket World Cup in Australia and New Zealand but we know that we have a good one-day team which can do very well.
"Jason is one of the good, young players who we believe will form part of the long-term future of West Indies Cricket. We expect him to be around for a very long time.
"He has a very good cricketing brain and has the makings of a very good leader."
