Dry spell for unlucky Anderson

The 33-year-old, who took six for 47 in Australia's first innings of 136 all out at Edgbaston, went off the field midway through an over in the second innings after suffering a side strain.

England went on to win the Test and enjoyed an evening celebrating in Birmingham.

But Anderson, speaking to close friend and former team-mate Graeme Swann on BBC Radio 5 Live, said: "Unfortunately, when you get injured you get an alcohol ban, so I was the designated driver last night."

Swann asked if Anderson was "Joe Root's bodyguard" - Stuart Broad had joked on Twitter that he would "keep (Root) out the Walkabout" after the batsman's infamous altercation with opposing batsman David Warner in the Australian-themed bar during the 2013 series - but Anderson replied: "We left that (Walkabout) alone last night."

Anderson reiterated his hope to be fit for the fifth Test at the Oval, beginning on August 20, and though he will miss the fourth at his favourite hunting ground of Trent Bridge he hopes to stay involved with the team.

"I'll referee the football warm-ups, make myself really useful!" he added.
