The 35-year-old Hampshire opening batsman missed his county’s recent Championship match against Warwickshire to undergo tests after feeling unwell.
And on Thursday evening Hampshire confirmed via an official statement that Carberry has been diagnosed with a cancerous tumour and will undergo further tests before treatment is commenced.
“Michael has been part of the Hampshire cricket family for ten years and on behalf of everyone associated with the cricket club I’d like to send him and his family our very best wishes at this difficult time,” Hampshire chairman Rod Bransgrove said.
“Carbs has taken on and beaten serious illness before and we’ll be doing all that we can to make sure he does the same again."
Carberry missed the opening months of the 2011 county cricket season after being diagnosed with a life-threatening blood clot on his lung.
