Jack Brooks led Yorkshire's charge towards retaining the LV= County Championship title by grabbing five for 35 as Somerset were skittled for 110 on the first day of their Division One match at Headingley.
Then Adam Lyth weighed in with a half-century and Gary Ballance an unbeaten 49 to strengthen Yorkshire's early grip on the game and at the close they were 138 for three and leading by 28.
Brooks' figures were his best for Yorkshire and they gave him his third five-wicket haul of the season while taking his Championship tally this summer to 53 victims.
Lyth needed 85 balls to reach his half-century, doing so in two and a half hours, before Jim Allenby ended his innings for 62.
Yorkshire's title bid was strengthened by Middlesex experiencing a first-day washout against Warwickshire at Edgbaston.
Middlesex did, however, win the toss and choose to bat, but the title could be beyond their reach before Yorkshire come to Lord's next week.
For Sussex, Chris Jordan secured a five-wicket haul to give his team the advantage at relegation rivals Worcestershire.
He ended with five for 57 as Worcestershire reached 185 for nine before they were rescued when play was called off an hour into the evening session because of rain at New Road.
Play also concluded early between Durham and Hampshire, because of bad light on day one at Chester-le-Street.
Hosts Durham were bowled out for 213 as Ryan Pringle was dismissed one run shy of what would have been a maiden first-class century.
Hampshire, who gave debuts to Ryan McLaren and Ryan Stevenson, closed 136 behind on 77 for three, but are bottom of Division One and desperately need a victory to maintain pressure on Sussex, who are seventh.
In Division Two, Lancashire's push for promotion was delayed by Rob Key's first championship century for Kent since May 2014, leaving them on 235 for three after a rain-affected morning.
Surrey, who need victory to seal promotion this week, shared an even day with Derbyshire, who closed 209 for five at The Oval. Chesney Hughes, notably, hit an unbeaten 85 for the visitors.
Hosts Leicestershire enjoyed the better of a rain-affected day against Gloucestershire at Grace Road closing on 127 for two, with Dan Redfern unbeaten on 29.
Kent's neighbours, Essex, are 177 for six against Northamptonshire. Rain delayed play until an hour after lunch at Chelmsford, and bad light also ensured it was stopped early.
