A 19-year-old Footitt wasted no time in getting his name out there on the county circuit, claiming then India captain Sourav Ganguly as his maiden first-class wicket on his way to five on debut and sharing a 101-run 10th-wicket partnership with Chris Read. Nottinghamshire beat Glamorgan by 10 wickets in that 2005 encounter and Footitt had shown his promise.
SHOWN THE DOOR
The former England Under-19 international found himself behind a string of fine fast bowlers at Notts and was looking for a new county after being released in 2009. Derbyshire saw potential in the quick left-armer and gave him a shot.
ON THE BRINK
Footitt suffered a back injury in 2012 which almost ended his career, although he did not know the seriousness of it until he had recovered from surgery. "They didn't let on because they didn't want me to have it on my mind when I was bowling that I might not have come back again," he said.
RECORD BREAKER
Footitt was the stand-out bowler in the LV= County Championship in 2014, taking a huge haul of 82 wickets at 19.12 to give the England selectors an almighty nudge. It was the most by a Derbyshire bowler in a season since England off-spinner Geoff Miller in 1984, while his 106 dismissals in all competitions broke a 49-year county record.
AN OVERDUE LEFTY
If selected for the fourth Test at Trent Bridge, Footitt would be the first left-arm seamer to debut for England in the longest format of the game since Ryan Sidebottom was given his first cap against Pakistan in May 2001.
