Just two of the seven teams competing in Pilsen, Czech Republic, will qualify for the PyeongChang Games - with the event designed to give those who have not yet booked their place through world or continental championships another shot.
China took first blood in their round robin match with Latvia, opening the scoring in the first end before Latvia scored a two in the second.
But from then on China dominated to prevail 11-5, seeing them top the team standings with three wins from three.
The host nation suffered a blow in their bid to qualify as they slipped to a 10-7 defeat to Germany.
The Germans had been without a win on the board but came from behind against the Czech Republic, scoring a three in the final end to seal victory.
And in the other fixture of session five, Italy edged out Finland 7-4 to leave the Finnish rink still chasing a first win of the tournament.
