Fine margins leave MacDonald gutted at curling worlds

Ewan MacDonald admits he has learnt the hard way the small margins between success and failure after Scotland's play-off hopes were effectively ended at the World Men's Curling Championships.

MacDonald has been unable to string successive victories together in Beijing and a second win over USA in the ninth round-robin session was followed by a 6-5 defeat to the Czech Republic.
That gave skip MacDonald's Scottish rink a record of two wins and five losses with four matches of the round-robin stage left to play, although they were mightily unlucky against the Czechs.
Going into the tenth end having clawed back to level the scores 5-5, skip MacDonald's last stone just feathered a front guard and left a Czech stone in the house for the vital final point.
And MacDonald, who won has won the World Championship title three times in 1999, 2006 and 2009, couldn't quite comprehend the fine lines that separate victory and defeat.
"What can I say, we've been right there all week, really, really close, it's just the finest of margins. It's so frustrating, it's just really by millimetres, you think at some point it will turn," he said.
"What can I say, we're absolutely gutted with that, not even a millimetre. To rub it by that little, the thing is we had to go tight on the guard, we couldn't miss the guard by a lot to move it because it was sitting on top of the tee.
"I thought the boys had held it there, I thought it was perfect. We were looking at losing four or five in the eighth until we managed to draw the back of the button."
