Scotland had put themselves in with a great shout of making the final in Sapporo after beating China 9-4 in the fourth place tie-breaker earlier in the day.
Russia, meanwhile, finished third in the round robin rankings, leaving them with the last stone advantage coming into start of the semi-final clash with Scotland.
And they used it well, blanking the first two ends before skip Anna Sidorova tapped back a Scottish stone in the house to score one point in the third.
Muirhead responded with a triple take-out to score one point and level at 1-1 in the next end, but Russia took single points in the next two ends for a 3-1 lead.
The match continued to go Russia's way with Muirhead missing with an attempted double take-out in the ninth end to give their opponents a steal of two points and a 7-2 lead, at which point the Scots conceded.
With Russia now through to the final, Scotland instead turn their attentions to the bronze medal match against either Switzerland or Canada on Saturday.
"We're gutted with that," said Muirhead. "We thought we had a chance to go to the semi and then make it to the final, and that's not possible now. We just weren't as sharp as this morning. We had a few half-shots and they played well.
"We didn't get any kind of momentum going. We didn't get into the right spots to create any chances. You get games like that.
"There's still a medal to play for so we're going to give it everything for that. It's going to be tough but that's part of sport.
"You've got to learn how to bounce back. We did it at the Europeans, we're going to give it another good shot here."
