Russia crowned world champions as Scotland fall just short of bronze

Russia faced off against China with the gold medal up for grabs and after the second end the former lead 3-1.

In the third end China halved the deficit, but Russia capitalised on their draw for two points in the fourth to give them a 5-2 lead.

China fought back and trailed 6-5 heading into the final end, only for Russia to be successful on their final draw to capture the gold medal.

Anastasia Bryzgalova said: "There is lots of emotions. We are very happy! Thanks to all our supporters who were with us during this week. We felt their support and they helped us to win."

And Alexander Krushelnitskiy added: "Of course I was nervous, it was a very hard and important shot [draw to the four foot with the last stone]. I have done my best and in every curling people should make this shot."

In the bronze medal match, Scots Gina Aitken and Bruce Mouat lost out 9-7 to the USA. USA had control of the game early, with a 7-3 lead after four ends, but Scotland fought back, scoring three points in the fifth end, followed by a steal of one point in the sixth end when USA were heavy on their draw to the eight-foot, which levelled the score at 7-7.

The Americans then made a draw to the button to score one point, and enter the final end with a one-point advantage. In that last end, Scotland had a takeout into a cluttered four-foot to remove the USA stone, but failed to do so, giving USA the victory with a 9-7 final.

Mouat said: "That was a tough game and we didn't play that well, so it's not ideal. They played really well so credit to them.

"Honestly we were trying to get angles, but they just made everything."
