Elinor Barker and Katie Archibald claim team pursuit silver at European Championships

Olympic champions Elinor Barker and Katie Archibald added a European silver medal to their collections as Great Britain opened the European Track Cycling Championships with second in the women's team pursuit.

Barker and Archibald were joined by Emily Kay and Manon Lloyd, who came in to replace Eleanor Dickinson following Wednesday's qualifying round.
And the quartet lived up to that second-place qualifying mark set on Wednesday, overcoming Germany, who failed to finish, in round one to clock a time of 4:21.164 in the final, clocking in 3.331s behind gold medallists Italy.
"For me personally, I think it was quite a difficult ride. That was my third ride over two days and I had a couple of mishaps, and it didn’t go great for me," said 22-year-old Kay.
"But I think that, as a team, we’ve pulled together well over the two days and to come away with silver; we’re all happy.
"There's definitely things to work on though."
Lloyd had not been included in the quartet that set Britain's qualifying time on Wednesday but replaced Dickinson for Thursday's first round and medal races, and was satisfied with her display.
"This is the starting point of the track season, so to come second to Italy, who did a really good time, and do a pretty good time ourselves, I’m really happy," said the 20-year-old.
"But we’ve got a lot to work on in the coming weeks."
Elsewhere, 19-year-old Dickinson put in a fine performance to finish fifth in the elimination race while Chris Latham could not replicate his world bronze medal in the scratch race as he came in tenth.
The day's other events saw both team sprint trios qualify in the top eight before bowing out in the quarter-finals.
Olympic champion Philip Hindes joined up with youngsters Jack Carlin and Joe Truman to post a time of 43.818s and qualify sixth.
Their female counterparts - Olympic sprint bronze medallist Katy Marchant and newcomer Sophie Capewell - stopped the clock in 33.834s for eighth in qualifying.
Both quarter-finals then saw Britain up against Germany, with their opponents getting the better of them on both occasions.
The men led for much of their race but were pipped in the final lap, eventually finishing sixth overall, while the women were downed by an impressive German showing and ended up seventh.
