Spanish cyclist Aketza Pena Iza has quit the Giro d'Italia after being suspended by his team following a positive 'A' test for the banned substance nandrolone in the Tour of Trentin in April.
Pena Iza's Euskaltel-Euskadi team said in a communique they had told him to leave the Giro as a precautionary measure following the 'A' test. He has been suspended by the team until further notice.
Pena Iza was lying 51st overall after Tuesday's stage of the Giro, won by Italian Stefano Garzelli.
Giro organiser Angelo Zomegnan declined to comment on the incident.
The Giro finishes on Sunday in Milan. Italian Danilo Di Luca is the current overall leader.
