Mark Cavendish was beaten to the line by Norway's Alexander Kristoff in the second stage of the Tour of Qatar, but did enough to retain his overall lead.
The 2013 winner won Monday's opening stage and narrowly missed a crash in the peleton before being pipped to the line.
Cavenish, who is riding for Team Dimension Data, still holds a five second lead going into the third day of the five-day event.
"At the end of the day I was happy with how it went," said Cavendish.
"On that finish I can't be too disappointed losing to Kristoff, he is strong on that type of finish. I am happy to keep the jersey."
The second stage was a test event for October's World Championships in Doha.
