Peter Sagan added a second win at the Giro di Sardegna by taking stage three in what is becoming a duel with Damiano Cunego.
Liquigas’ Slovakian starlet, 21, won the opening stage in Italy and shaded Josè Serpa Perez to victory after the 173km ride from Orani to Lanusei, with stage two winner Cunego third.
The win puts Sagan on top of the general classification, four seconds ahead of Italian Lampre rider Cunego and six seconds clear of Perez.
Former world champion Alessandro Ballan attempted to lead several breakaways during the race but, dspite support from the likes of Antonio Santoro, Paul Tiralongo and Stefan Pirazzi, they were unable to really stretch the peloton and Sagan led the pack home.
The fourth stage on Friday is 174.2km between Lanusei and Oristano.
