Simon Spilak beats Geraint Thomas to Tour of Switzerland glory

Simon Spilak (Katusha) snatched overall victory at the Tour de Suisse after producing an incredible performance in the final stage 38km time trial around Bern.

Tom Dumoulin (Giant-Alpecin) won the 38.4km final time trial and moved up to third overall.

However, Spilak gained enough time to dethrone Thibaut Pinot (FDJ) and move past pre-stage favourite Geraint Thomas (Team Sky).

Thomas finished five second behind Spilak in the final classification, with Dumoulin third at 19 seconds.

Local hero Fabian Cancellara (Trek Factory Racing) finished third in the time trial, at 19 seconds back.

"I am really happy! This was a main objective in the season and I was very motivated, so to get this victory is incredible," said Spilak.

"After a lot of second and third places, finally I have managed again to win a big race. Of course this is the biggest victory in my career.

"This week was a hard one, but I felt good and strong and the team provided great support for me...

"Yesterday I could see the circuit and I realised it suited me well. It was really hard but I like the races like this. So I was motivated and concentrated in the morning before the start."
