Six Day London 2017: When is it, where is and is it on television? Everything you need to know

Six Day Cycling is a combination of the most entertaining elements of track cycling and non-sporting entertainment.

A Six Day race is one of the oldest forms of the sport, but the new version sees the event carried out in a party atmosphere.

And out on the track riders compete in multiple events over the six days for an overall title.

London is part of the Six Day Series, which will feature weeks in Berlin, Copenhagen and Mallorca in 2018.

Six Day London will be held from Tuesday October 24 until Sunday October 29.

Lee Valley VeloPark will host Six Day London in 2017.

The Olympic velodrome in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park is one of the most spectacular buildings built for the 2012 Games.

Six Day cycling features an array of different types of race:

A pair of riders will take turns to race, switching roles with a hand sling to propel their partner forward.

The rider at the back of the race will be eliminated once every two laps, creating a string of sprint finishes during the race.

Each rider has their own pace-setting ‘Derny’, allowing them to benefit from a constant slipstream to reach extremely high speeds.

The Omnium is a multi-event race featuring of four different disciplines - a 7.5km Scratch Race, a 7.5km Tempo Race, an Elimination Race and finally, a 20km Points Race.

Sprinters race individually for two and a half laps as fast as they can.

Another event for the sprinters sees the riders jostle for position behind the pace-setting Derny, who moves out of the way for the last two and a half laps.

Britain Mark Cavendish and Peter Kennaugh are the star attractions for the home crowd in London.

Cav needs little introduction. The Manxman returned to track cycling in 2016 and won a World title in the Madison and an Olympic silver medal in the Omnium. Much to the delight of track cycling fans, Cav opted to continue his track career beyond the Rio Games, partnering Bradley Wiggins in the Six Days Series as they finished second in London last year and won Six Days Ghent.

Wiggins’ retirement opened up a spot alongside Cavendish, which has been filled by the more and capable Kennaugh. A Team Pursuit Olympic and World Champion, Kennaugh has plenty of track pedigree, and his move from Team Sky to Bora-Hansgrohe has freed him to make a much-anticipated return to the boards.

The pair to beat are Belgian duo Kenny de Ketele and Moreno de Pauw, who have won both Six Day London meets since its return in 2015.

The British riders heading to London are incredibly strong, with Elinor Barker and Katie Archibald the stand-outs.

Barker is a phenomenon. The 23-year-old added Six Day Series title to her burgeoning medal collection last year, which already includes Olympic Team Pursuit gold, three world titles (two in team pursuit and one in the points race) and three European golds.

Joining Barker on the boards is another British phenomenon in Archibald. The Scot won Six Day London last year and has medals coming out of her ears. Alongside Barker she won Team Pursuit golds at the 2016 Olympics and 2014 World Championships, before adding an individual world title to her collection in Hong Kong earlier this year. Her dominance in Europe has been even more stark, with Archibald racking up eight goals and a silver at four championships from 2013 to 2016.
