CSC rider Stuart O'Grady pulled out of Tirreno-Adriatico after breaking his collerbone and five ribs when he crashed in Thursday's stage 2.
“Stuart was very unlucky and hit a hole in the road on one of the descents. It’s not a complicated fracture in his collarbone, but he’s obviously in a lot of pain right now.
"If we are optimistic, he could be ready in four weeks, and since it’s not so complicated he might be able to resume his training in a couple of weeks," CSC doctor Joost De Maeseneer told the official team website.
Another Aussie in bad shape: McEwen breathing badly
Davitamon-Lotto rider Robbie McEwen said that he is in bad shape for Tirreno-Adriatico. "Since I fell at the finish in the last stage of the Three Days of West Flanders, I have been suffering quite a lot," the Australian sprinter told French daily, La Derniere Heure. "From the hip, the thigh, but especially from my ribs that were touched when I fell.
"I don't feel good on my bike, I can't pull on the bike and, above all, I can't breathe freely. When the rhythm gets faster towards the end of the stage I really have trouble staying in the game.
"Right from the first day, I lost more than two minutes to the leaders. But what do you want to do when, at full speed, you cannot breathe properly? I am not even sure that I can sprint on flat ground! That must be possible by biting hard, but to beat the best, there is still a lot left to do."
