The stats which make Chris Froome one of the all-time greats

Since Miguel Induran in 1995, no one had been able to retain their Tour title. Here are some other numbers which show the importance of Froome’s feat.

The Team Sky rider joins Belgian Phippe Thys (1913, 1914 and 1920), Frenchman Louison Bobet (1953, 1954 and 1955) and American Greg Lemond (1986, 1989 and 1990) with three titles to their name.

Only four men have won the Tour more times than that, all with five titles.

Jacques Anquetil (1957, 1961, 1962, 1963 and 1964), Eddy Merckx (1969, 1970, 1971, 1972 and 1974), Bernard Hinault (1978, 1979, 1982, 1982 and 1985) and Miguel Indurain (1991, 1992, 1993, 1994 and 1995).

With 14 days in 2013, 16 days in 2015 and 14 days in 2016 Froome has a total of 44 days with the yellow jersey.

Eleventh in the rankings at the start of the 103rd edition of the Tour, Froome gained seven places in this particular table.

Jacques Anquetil (50) and Miguel Indurain (60) are within touching distance, but Bernard Hinault (75) and Eddy Merckx (96) are still some way ahead.

With victories in Montpellier (stage 11) and Megève (stage 18), Froome took his career total of stage wins to seven.

For Britain, only Barry Hoba (8) and of course Mark Cavendish (30) have more.
