Daley's Olympic future hung in the balance after the 23-year-old suffered a shock elimination at Rio 2016 and a string of injuries.
But his impressive display at the World 10m platform final saw him execute five perfect dives to earn a score of 590.95 and pip current Olympic champion Aisen Chen of China to gold with a spectacular final routine.
The Briton - who last claimed individual gold at a World Championships in 2009 – said his triumph had rekindled his hopes of finishing on top of the podium at a future Olympics.
"An Olympic gold is the one thing I'm yet to win and it's my dream," admitted Daley.
"My score would have been enough to win the Olympics last year, but if you ran this competition again today there's no guarantee of the same outcome."
And Daley, who admitted that he was at the lowest point of his career following his premature Rio exit, insisted he wouldn't let complacency ruin his chances of chasing his dream.
"I can't take it [victory] for granted and I'm going to go away and work twice as hard because getting to the top is hard, but staying there is harder," the two-time Olympic bronze medallist said.
"Back in 2009 no-one expected me to win and ever since then I've been chasing gold and thinking about trying to win at every single event. But after the stress of Rio, that changed.
"I just wanted to get back to diving because I love it, like I used to in 2009."
Daley will now take a short break from the sport to honeymoon with newlywed husband Dustin Lance Black, before returning to the diving board in a bid to win a third successive individual Commonwealth Games title at Gold Coast 2018.
