Germany captured the Dressage gold medal at the 2017 Longines FEI European Championships in Gothenburg, Sweden Wednesday with a performance so dominant that it did not even need the top individual score of World No.1 Isabell Werth and her 12-year-old black Olympic mare Weihegold OLD to clinch the title.
Helen Langehanenberg (on Damsey FRH), Sönke Rothenberger (Cosmo 59), Dorothee Schneider (Sammy Davis Jr.) and anchors Werth and Weihegold finished the competition with a team score of 237.072, ahead of second-place Denmark and hosts Sweden in third. The country won €15,000 for its victory, and reasserted its dominance in the sport. As dressage-news.com noted, this was the 23rd victory for Germany in the history of 27 championships. Great Britain missed out on the championship podium for the first time in several years this year, finishing fourth.
