Reinis Nitišs called on his FIA World Rallycross Championship rival Petter Solberg for some crucial advice ahead of his rallying return on his home round of the FIA European Rally Championship this weekend.
The Latvian World RX star, for whom this year’s Rally Liepāja marks his third rally start, asked Solberg which starting position he should select for today’s opening leg of the ERC counter.

Nitišs earned the right to take part in the start selection ceremony in Liepāja yesterday evening following his impressive performance during Friday afternoon’s Qualifying Stage. Despite missing Free Practice due to a technical issue, he was third quickest in the ERC2 category in P13 overall.

“I am not so experienced on choosing the start place so I just called Petter Solberg,” Nitišs explained. “He said if it’s muddy and rainy pick the closest one to the start.”

Solberg, winner of the 2003 FIA World Rally Championship, is in Liepāja to support his son Oliver, who is contesting the national section of the gravel event.

Unfortunately for Nitišs, the higher start positions had already been selected by the time his turn to pick came around. As a result, the 21-year-old will start P13 out of the 15 ERC priority drivers eligible to take part in the selection process.
