Italy’s Daniele Garozzo wins FIE individual foil gold, France team winners in St. Petersburg

Italy’s Daniele Garozzo another impressive victory to his tally by winning the FIE men’s individual foil World Cup competition in St. Petersburg, Russia.

The Olympic gold medallist had to overcome a stiff challenge throughout the competition before eventually claim gold, by beating his Italian compatriot Andrea Cassara in the final.
France were also made to work hard before winning the gold medal in the men’s team foil event, by beating Russia.
The weekend’s action took place at the historic Zimniy Stadium in St Petersburg which saw Garozzo defeat Young Ki Son of Korea, 15-9, in the quarter-finals before accounting for Hong Kong’s Ka Long Cheung in the semi-final with a 15-12 victory.
In the Final, despite being national teammates Garozzo and Cassara fought out a great intense battle but it was the former who eventually prevailed 15-13 to take the gold.
Cassara’s achievements in making the Final should be underestimated as he had beaten Russia’s Timur Safin in the semi-finals and also overcame the challenge of World Champion, USA’s Miles Chamley-Watson in the quarterfinals, 15-9.
In the men’s team foil event, France faced old adversaries Russia in the final, claiming gold on the back of a determined 45-34 final score.
The French had reached the gold medal match by virtue of beating Italy in the semi-final in a much closer match, thanks to a 45-43 scoreline. Russia also had a narrow success in their semi-final encounter, defeating the USA by one point, 45-44.
There was also FIE World Cup action in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where the women’s individual epee completion was won by Estonia’s Kristina Kuusk.
Kuusk beat Germany’s Alexandra Ndolo in the Final thanks to a 15-10 scoreline to take the gold medal, having beaten Russia’s Daria Martynyuk 15-11 in the quarter-finals, and compatriot Erika Kirpu 8-5 in the semi-finals.
Ndolo for her part overcame the challenge of Germany’s Maria Navarria 15-11 in the quarter-finals, before edging past Poland’s Ewa Nelip in the semi-finals 15-14.
In the women’s team epee competition, Italy beat Russia 29-28 in the final to take the gold.
