Chamley-Watson earned an impressive success in the men’s foil event in Tokyo, Japan, whilst Van Brummen was the surprise package by winning the women’s epee event in Suzhou, China.
At the Prince Takamodo World Cup in Tokyo, Chamley-Watson improved upon his seventh place finish at the season-opening event in Cairo by beating Italy’s Giorgio Avola 15-10 in the final.
The 2013 world champion, who surprisingly lost in the second round of this year’s Rio Olympics before winning bronze in the team event, had to do matters the hard way. The 26-year-old disposed of Olympic champion Daniele Garozzo in the quarterfinals, one of five Italians he came up against and beat en route to his victory in the Final.
The first World Cup gold for Chamley-Watson has the added benefit of now moving him up to number 11 in the official FIE Rankings.
The event’s bronze medal was shared by losing semi-finalists Erwan Le Pechoux of France and Alessandro Paroli of Italy.
Chamley-Watson was not so successful in the team event as along with his USA teammates they were beaten by 45-35 by Russia. Italy comfortably accounted for Japan by a 45-29 scoreline to earn the bronze medal.
In Suzhou, China, there was an unexpected victory for the world No. 187 Anna Van Brummen.
The Singapore-born 22-year-old epeeist, who had just one top-50 finish at the senior level before this event, beat Ukraine’s Feybi Bezhura, the world No. 58, by a score of 15-13.
Russia’s Tatiana Logunova, who won the first World Cup event of the season in Tallinn, and South Korea’s Sera Song split the bronze medal as losing semi-finalists.
The team event went to Ukraine as they beat South Korea 43-32, with Russia claiming the bronze thanks to narrowly beating Estonia 34-33.
