The 23-year-olds lively free skate wasnt without fault as he fell during the routine but a total score of 262.49 was good enough to see him finish ahead of Russians Maxim Kovtun and Sergei Voronov.
Fernandez, who just missed out on an Olympic bronze medal in at the Sochi Games where he finished fourth, was clearly delighted with the win but admitted the free skate had been hard work.
He said: "I couldn't even bow to the people at the end.
In the pairs event it was the Russian duo of Ksenia Stolbova and Fedor Klimov who produced the best short program of the day to sit top.
They scored 71.38 the only pair to break 70 but not far behind are their compatriots Yuko Kavaguti and Aleksandr Smirov, who scored 69.86.
Frances Vanessa James and Morgan Cipres are in third but are some way down having scored 60.13. Sportsbeat 2015
