Abdallah El Said scored the only goal of the game against Uganda two minutes from time to grab Egypt a slender win in Group D.
It was a tightly-contested game of little real quality, but seven-time champions Egypt made much the brighter start.
Uganda responded well in the second half, though, employing the counter-attack effectively.
That meant both goalkeepers had plenty of opportunity to shine, with Uganda's Denis Onyango showing courage and timing, flying out of the box to clear with his head, and Egypt's Essam El Hadary demonstrating power in his punching.
Uganda may feel hard done by after 90 minutes of hard toil to stay in the game, with the sucker-punch coming as legs tired and gaps opened up in the defence, allowing El Said to sneak in unmarked.

TALKING POINT

What's with the state of that pitch? Yes, it's the same for both sides, but no team should play on one like that, with drainage ditches running up and down its length.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Denis Onyango (Uganda). OK, so it's easy for a keeper to shine when he's under pressure for large portions of the game, but he took risks, took knocks and kept his team in it.

KEY MOMENTS

45' BRAVE! Some beautiful poise there from Onyango, coming out to head the ball away from the approaching foot of Hamed. Brave.
51' NO GOAL! Ochoa has got the ball in the back of the net but the flag's up and he's well offside despite his complaints.
57' SAVE! Up the other end, Hadary is in the thick of things, with a great dig-style flick away, then a straightforward, confident aerial catch.
88' GOAL! Egypt 1 Uganda 0: And there it is, El Said on the counter, rifling in low past the goalkeeper at the far post.
