In-form Paris Cowan-Hall got Wycombe off to the perfect start with his fifth goal in as many matches, powering home a diving header from a Joe Jacobson corner in the third minute.
The lead only lasted five minutes, thoug,h as Jonathan Smith controlled a clearance and let go with a fine volley that gave Wycombe keeper Matt Ingram no chance.
The draw saw Wycombe surrender top spot to the Shrews, with the two set to meet as the festive fixtures continue on Sunday.
But Ainsworth, who was announced as having signed a new long-term club at Wycombe before kick-off against Luton, wants a divine intervention to stop the match going ahead.
"We've got a short turnaround period before Shrewsbury, so I'm hoping for a freak snowstorm so we can get a bit more rest," he said.
"They are a strong side and are rated by many as the best team in the league. They came straight down from League One with the aim to go straight back up so it will be a tough game.
"This was a crazy game. Chances were decent for both sides and anyone could have won it. One minute you want to win the game, the next you're happy with a point. No team deserved to lose."
On his new contract, Ainsworth added: " The details are private but it's a deal that marries up with the long-term plan of the club.
"I want to be part of what the chairman wants to achieve - to get Wycombe back as a good business financially, as a competitive team in League Two and ultimately to be competing in League One. That is the long-term aim."
Luton also dropped a place following the draw, slipping out of the top three and into fourth, but boss John Still is relishing the quick turnaround and the visit of Portsmouth next.
"I'm ready for the next game. It's not difficult for the players," he said. "They are professional footballers and they will be fine. They will recover. It's the same for everybody else at the end of the day.
"I'm delighted with our performance especially after going a goal down. It would have been unfair on anyone to have been beaten. Both teams went for it and it was a proper keenly contested, cup-tie style game.
"The quick response was good. I always try to put things into context. We are the away team in a top of the table clash in difficult conditions and we responded fantastically.
"One of the pleasing aspects for me in a game like this is that our back four didn't have much work to do, just one or two things. We could have possibly come away with three points but it was hard work, it was really hard work."
